SENSEable City Lab and SNCF have produced CO2GO, a smartphone app that uses a combination of your phones built in GPS and sensor systems to calculate your total carbon footprint in real-time.

The application is currently developed for Android and relies heavily on the device's accelerometer to identify the transportation mode while improving accuracy of the calculations with a phone's GPS and mapping system. This technique saves battery life and also frees the phone to be oriented in any way while traveling.

Users of the app can then share their low carbon emission routes with the user community, and a "city view" provides insight in how the user's carbon emissions and travel distance compare to his fellow citizen's total and average values.
