Nest Protect

Safety shouldn't be annoying

The Protect is a new smoke and carbon monoxide alarm being released by Nest Labs.

Connecting with your home's Wi-Fi network and carrying an on-board 802.15.4 radio to talk with the companies exisiting thermostat line, the Protect comes packed with a number of additional sensors behind its square exterior shell:

  • Heat & Humidity sensor
  • Three activity sensors
  • Ambient light sensor
  • And of course a smoke & carbon monoxide sensor

After seeing research noting that children often sleep through a ringing alarm but will wake to the sound of a voice talking to them the team designed the device to speak to you during an alert. Changing its tone based on the severity of the situation and navigating you to what room of the house a problem has been detected in.

If the alarm is overreacting due to your skills in the kitchen, rather than pulling out a chair to tear out the 9-volt batteries, you instead can simply wave your arms in front of the device to disable the alert.

Additional features of the Protect include:

  • Being able to receive notification alerts from your mobile device if the batteries are running low or if the alarm is triggered.
  • A "Nightly Promise.” The device will emit a flash of green light after you turn off the lights in your room to let you know that it is operating properly.
  • Integration with the Nest Learning Thermostat to improve its Auto-Away detection and to automatically turn off your gas furnace (a possible source of poisonous carbon monoxide leaks) in the case of an alarm.
